NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

Our lay volunteers are paramount to VIM’s success. Most are retired and may have been CEO’s, CFO’s, librarians, teachers, college professors, professional musicians, or sports professionals in their former lives. These individuals are usually the first people our patients see when they enter the clinic. They have a variety of skills that are put into practice in many different ways at the clinic. From computer and telephone experience to working with others, these lay volunteers’ skills are extraordinary and unique. They are non-medical, but professionals in everything they do.
If you are ready to join this diverse team we can use help in the following positions: Greeters, Front Desk Phone Receptionists, Screeners, Schedulers, Medical Records Staff, Pharmacy Staff, Dental Clinic Receptionists and Nursing Secretaries.
We are always in need of Spanish interpreters for our non-English speaking patients.

Non-Medical Volunteer Opportunities
Greeters/Assistant Greeters:
Responsibilities of the greeters, who are stationed at the front desk and lobby area, include welcoming and signing in patients. They assist and direct patients to the waiting area, to screening and triage stations, to scheduling, and to the pharmacy. They locate medical charts, inform the medical staff that a patient has arrived, and monitor the patient’s progress through the system. In addition, greeters may help patients complete forms and answer questions.

Front Desk Phone Receptionists
The phone receptionist in the medical building receives incoming calls, answers questions about VIM, directs calls to the appropriate stations, and takes messages. This volunteer must be comfortable with a multiple-line system and have comprehensive knowledge of VIM and its operations. Phone receptionists in the McConnell building answer the phone, take messages, and assist the various directors. These receptionists need light computer skills.
Screeners
All new patients are screened to determine eligibility, and ongoing patients are screened yearly to ascertain their current eligibility. Screeners interview the patient, complete forms that verify income types and amounts, and determine whether the patient lives or works on Hilton Head or Daufuskie Islands.
Medical Appointment Schedulers
The schedulers make appointments for patients in person or by phone using a computer system. They schedule for all physicians, for special procedures, and for the mental health staff.
Dental Appointment Schedulers
Dental appointments are made in person only. The scheduler assesses the patient’s dental needs, reviews treatment history and schedules accordingly.
Medical Records Staff
Volunteers pull medical records prior to appointments and file them after appointments. They review charts to insure eligibility requirements have been met and create new files. Some of the medical records staff are trained to access and input information in a computerized system.
Interpreters
Spanish fluency is required. Interpreters, who are identified by their red nametags, assist Spanish-speaking patients in completing forms, communicating with screeners, schedulers, and the medical staff. They may accompany a patient through the exam process. Interpreters often perform other tasks while remaining available for translating.
Pharmacy Staff
Volunteers, who work under the supervision of the pharmacist, need basic computer skills. They assist in maintaining drug inventories, stocking shelves, repackaging bulk pharmaceuticals, and helping physicians document drug usage.
We are in great need of retired or active pharmacists or medical professionals who are familiar with pharmaceuticals to volunteer just a few hours a week or month.
Phone Solicitors
These volunteers assist the development director in calling area businesses to update information or follow up on requests.
Event Planning
Volunteers assist the development director and volunteer director to plan events throughout the year.
Computer Support
Volunteers with good keyboard skills and who are familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.) assist the development director and others to create documents and do research.
